FillStub vs TradeLog

The only product in our audit that actually solves the tax problem, and it is not a journal.

TradeLog is the incumbent this product is measured against on tax, and it is a serious one: an automated cross account wash sale engine, Form 8949 generated directly, a Section 1256 report for Form 6781, IRS rules for exercise and assignment, Section 475 mark to market election support, and curated corporate action history going back years. It is also Windows desktop software with no performance analytics, no equity curve and no strategy statistics, which is why an options trader today buys TradeLog AND a journal.

What TradeLog does better

A wash sale engine that carries the disallowed loss forward

Automated and reconciled across accounts, which is what the IRS rule actually requires. Ours MATCHES a wash sale and reports the disallowed amount; it does not yet carry it into next year's basis, and the worksheet says so.

Around thirty brokers, and years of corporate action history

Splits, mergers and spinoffs adjusted as curated data. We read five brokers and no corporate actions.

Section 475 mark to market election support

A named tier feature. Nothing here knows what a 475 election is.

Twenty five years of doing exactly this

Copyright reads 1999. A tax product's age is a feature, not a liability.

What we do that they do not

It is a journal as well

Per strategy statistics, an interval on every estimate, the positions your broker exported as unrelated rows. TradeLog has no analytics at all, by design.

It runs in a browser

TradeLog is a Windows desktop application. Ours is a web app and a free tool that parses in your own browser with nothing uploaded.

A tenth of the price

$240 a year against $219 to $459 for the first year, and their renewals start at $175.

No record caps

Their tiers cap at 1,500 and 5,000 trade records; over that is the $459 tier. We have no cap on any plan, including the free one.

Which one to pick

If your trading is equities and your problem is a complete, defensible tax return across several brokers with wash sales carried forward, buy TradeLog. It does that better than we do and it has done it for twenty five years. Come here if your trading is index options, where the 60/40 split is most of the answer, or if you want the tax split and the journal to be one thing rather than two purchases.
